About
My name is Valerie Cervantes, and I am a Mexican American printmaker and storyteller recently graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts
at Tufts University.
The marrow of life is found in the stories we tell of it. Some tales maintain full casts of actors, musicians, and production teams and others require little more than a page set with words. And yet the key component of both, of any narrative, is an audience; a living vessel in which a story may germinate. I am primarily interested in this interplay between storyteller and audience- the ways that stories can shift and transform over time and place. Growing up receiving the oral history of my own family, filled with fibs, logical incongruencies, and magic, I began to form an understanding of storytelling as a form of family stewardship. I choose now to fill my art with as much fantasy as possible, telling stories that blur the borders between the mystical and corporeal worlds; all in an effort to capture something of the truth of those histories
